About Akogba

DESCRIPTION:

Ori Oke Akogba or Or’Oke Akogba is one of the natural endowments of Ekinrin-Adde. It is a giant Monolith sitting in a pristine state in the north-west of the community overlooking the town as well as being the source of the mysterious Akogba Spring. Although it’s not the only Mountain surrounding this beautiful community, it’s arguably the most prominent at an alititude of about 3500 feet(1050m above sea level), This ingenious and glorious intrusion of our community’s landscape is among a chain of other mountains to the north of Ekinrin Adde among which are Oroke Kere, Oroke Asi Oroke Kongo and Oroke Ewuta.

HISTORY AND TRADITIONS:

There are some traditional worshippers and liberators of Akogba. The early worshipers were led by Iye Agongonde Amodede of Ekinrin aboriginal who passed over a hundred years ago, but her followers still perform this ritual.

Oota is said to be the spiritual husband of Akogba.

And Akogba is still poured libations annually by the followers of Oota with a black goat. Whoever slaughters the goat must also invoke rainfall shortly after slaughtering the goat.

There’s also an annual bean cake (Akara) that must be shared to commemorate the yearly worship and libation of Akogba.

Since Oota is the spiritual husband of Akogba, Oota must first be libated before Akogba.

Oota’s libation has constant time that mustn’t be missed but Akogba’s libation has to be anytime after Oota’s libation.

There’s also a link to these libations with Ankinkin river. This is because part of the libation materials includes water fetched from Ankinkin River.

What relationship do these have with Omi Ajolayo(which means the Python emerged)?

There was also the myth while in the 80’s that there is a big Python somewhere within the vicinity of Akogba stream though harmless. How true is this?

Here’s the link between them:

Oota is said to be the spiritual husband of Akogba. And Oota’s shrine is very close to a pond called Ajolayo which literally means Python has emerged.

Akoba is a granitic rock, though there’re possibilities of gemstones like topaz, Beryl, tourmaline being found in it. And the rock could also be a reservoir of water as there are cracks and faults which gives room for the passage of water into the rock but this same water will find a passage back into the nearby sea while some will be retained.

People who built their houses close to the Akogba Hill can testify to the fact that there’s a constant and lasting supply of water in their borne holes or wells, this is because the quantity of water which finds its way through the rock is escaping from the joints/faults.

The name Akogba was further made popular especially in Ijumu LGA around 1998 – 2000 by late Olori Janet Oludunmi Babalola when she named one of her business ventures by the name and the picture of the monolith visible on the pack. It was called Akogba Pure and Natural Water

Even though, the water used for the business was a filtered borehole water, but the name, image and address made it easily relatable to Ekinrin-Adde.
